Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.
Jim Rohn

Jim Rohn is a legend in his field and he has a way of putting quotes together that really hit the spot for me. This one, in particular, resonates with me so much as I am a massive believer in self-education.

Just have another read of the quote and take a minute to let it sink in.

Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.

This is my take on Jim’s famous quote and how I see it being applied.

Formal education will make you a living

Don’t knock formal education.

There’s nothing wrong with formal education, in fact, it is extremely important as formal education sets the foundation for learning when we are younger. This foundation is a requirement for job applications or a set of required grades if you are wanting to pursue something academic or professional like being a doctor.

As Jim says, this will earn you a living and in most cases a good living. That’s great and we shouldn’t knock it, but what formal education doesn’t always teach you is to think outside the box, become resourceful and develop those essential life skills. Formal education will not teach you how to become self-aware, understand how you think or help you with relationships.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to earn a living, but will it serve other parts of your life?

Self-education will make you a fortune

The power of self-education.

This part of the quote is extremely powerful. Note how in both sections of the quote there is no reference to money, he refers to living and fortune. As I mentioned, making a living can be extremely lucrative, even through formal education, but this is not the point of this quote.  When this terminology is combined, fortune and self-education, this spins a totally different meaning on the word fortune and it goes a lot deeper than its monetary meaning.

What Jim is saying here, is that by becoming self-educated, it can open up a world of information, knowledge and opportunity that can assist in making a lot more than a living. To become self-educated you need to develop a set of skills that go beyond the ones required to prepare you for exams. Self-education requires a set of skills that can be replicated throughout every area of your life, and this is the fortune.

The rewards that can be reaped from developing your self-education goes a lot further than financial security. They can assist you in becoming more self-aware and resourceful, learning about yourself, communication and most of all building a mindest that can be applied to any given situation or environment.

These are just a select few of the rewards available for becoming self-educated, but as soon as you decide to make self-education a part of your everyday life, you’ll begin to see what fortune is available for every one of us.

Every day, every new experience or setback I am still learning. It’s that learning I want to share. I want to share my own experiences, how I learn things, what techniques I use and how I help people in their life.
