Deletion to Multipotentialite
What the heck is a multipotentialite? More on this in a minute, however, a week ago I announced on all my of my social media profiles that I was coming off them. At that point in time, I felt there were a lot of reasons for this. It is a situation I have been in before where I needed to clear my head, wipe the blackboard clean so I could look at things from a fresh perspective.
I then made a drastic decision, I deleted my website as well!
I was going to write a post about why I had come to this decision, but a lot has happened in a week, including the reinstatement of my website along with some essential social media profiles, so it rendered that post redundant.
Why did I do it though?
This is something I have been doing for years, thinking of new ideas, getting passionate about them, taking action on them only to get bored or lose interest for a while and then start something new. Rather than let them sit and wait until the itch came back, I would delete everything associated with the idea, project or hobby and start something different.
Since I left the band I have been looking for the ‘one thing’ that I was born to do, that ‘one thing’ that I was passionate about, that ‘one thing’ that would generate enough money so I could have freedom. A few days ago I came across something that made me realise where I have been going wrong, and it has been staring me right in the face for years.
Puttylike.com – A Home for Multipotentialites
Whilst reading one of the latter chapters of Chris Guillebeau’s new book ‘Born for This’, Chris had introduced a female called Emilie Wapnick. During this part of the book, Chris explores the different ways people can execute what they were born to do and after reading the paragraph written by Emilie, I headed over to her site Puttylike.com.
As I began to read Emilie’s website I felt like I had struck gold! Just about every post, meaning, explanation, I could relate to. I have done and still continue to do all of the things a multipotentialite does. For years I have been searching for some answers as to why I do this sort of thing and often wondered if there was something wrong with me. Finally, an explanation as to who I am and why I do things the way I do them.
What is a Multipotentialite?
As I am still absorbing my new found label, there is no better person to explain what a multipotentialite is, other than Emilie herself. Here is her definition of a Multipotentilaite.
A multipotentialite is a person who has many different interests and creative pursuits in life.
Multipotentialites have no “one true calling” the way specialists do. Being a multipotentialite is our destiny. We have many paths and we pursue all of them, either sequentially or simultaneously (or both).
Multipotentialites thrive on learning, exploring, and mastering new skills. We are excellent at bringing disparate ideas together in creative ways. This makes us incredible innovators and problem solvers.
When it comes to new interests that emerge, our insatiable curiosity leads us to absorb everything we can get our hands on. As a result, we pick up new skills fast and tend to be a wealth of information.
What was also interesting is that whilst I was updating my website, under my profile image I had given myself the title of Author/Writer/Blogger & Jack of all trades! Essentially, a multipotentialite!
At this moment I am consuming the content from her site and learning more about myself. I say this as it feels like all the content on PuttyLike could have been written about me! As it turns out, us multipotentilaites are quite a unique bunch of people and I’m not the raving lunatic I sometimes thought I was!

The realization of Multipotentialite and where have I been going wrong
I have suddenly realised where I have been going wrong. My mistake has been to look and search for my ‘one thing’, thinking that it was just ‘one thing’ I was born to do when its clearly not. As a multipotentialite it’s in my wiring to do lots of different things in this way and it’s time to embrace this.
During the last week, I have written lots of notes in my journal whilst reviewing my aims and goals. It’s very hard to hack the time/money equation. Usually, if you’re in a 9-5 job the more money you earn the less freedom and time you have. On the flip side the more time and freedom you have the less money you have. This is where you need to create or invest in something that generates passive income.
The second option is this; do a job you love where the money becomes secondary, let’s say like an actor. An actor doesn’t always have lots of freedom but the love for the job and other rewards it brings make it a fair trade-off.
I currently feel like I have hit the jackpot and have found my dream career. What has changed? My mindset and my understanding of my internal wiring. If I look at what my ultimate goal is in life it’s this; to have the freedom and security to do what I want, when I want, how I want and with who I want.
As a multipotentialite, I already have this!
Are you a Multipotentialite?
